Garden Gazebos: A Short History
Gazebos are known by many names, including pagodas and screen houses. Although you may think of them as a modern architectural feature, they actually date back thousands of years. The first historically documented gazebos were found in Egyptian royal gardens around 5000 years BC, and they were used as small temples for popular Egyptian gods. In China and Japan, they have also been used for thousands of years, bringing spiritual harmony to gardens and allowing a space of quite reflection.
Gazebo like structures were also common in Greece and Rome, particularly in Mediterranean coastal areas. They were used both for recreational purposes and as small temple structures dedicated to specific gods.
In Europe, gazebos emerged as very popular structures during the Renaissance, especially for monasteries. The first known usage of the term “gazebo” for these structures, however, was in 1752 by William Halfpenny in a book titled “New Designs for Chinese Temples.” The origin of the word is not known, however, although some etymologists speculated it might be related to Latin “-ebo” which means “I will look” or “I will see.”
